Hazmat employees shipping hazardous materials must be trained to be familiar with and aware of the regulations, site specific training and safety training. This training includes understanding the USDOT 9 hazard classes, hazardous materials determination, labeling, marking, packaging, placarding and shipping papers. Even if a company just ships hazardous wastes and not hazardous materials, this training is still required. Fines issued by USDOT are severe and have been as high as $78,000 for improper shipping of 3 oz package of a flammable adhesive. Training must be repeated every 3 years and sometimes sooner.
In order to ship hazardous materials, the shipper must be trained in accordance with 49 CFR Subpart H, Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR).
